This lightning season I have spoken to lots of unhappy clients. The story seems to be universal. Clients have finger biometric readers damaged by lightning and as I understand it, the repair cost is about R8000 per reader. To top it off the site is compromised because it takes a few weeks to have the reader repaired.
What makes it worse is that most clients spent money on surge protection to try an avoid getting their biometric readers damaged by lightning.
When we looked at making a surge protector for biometric readers we abandoned the idea because we just thought that the wiegand port on a biometric reader was too "sensitive". We decided to rather choose optical isolation. I have made a short video to explain how optical isolation works.
