The thunderstorm season is here again, are your electronic systems ready?

As with any natural phenomenon, lightning strikes are not all the same and have variations in discharge magnitudes. The magnitude of lightning strikes ranges from 2KA to over 200KA.

The BS6651 standard gives us the following distribution:

  • 1% of strikes exceed 200KA
  • 10% of strikes exceed 80KA
  • 50% of strikes exceed 28KA
  • 90% of strikes exceed 8KA
  • 99% of strikes exceed 3KA

This is why we recommend that the rating of your surge protection should be at least 10KA.

With the economic challenges, we face it is now more important than ever to protect our electronic infrastructure — systems like your IT, CCTV and access control systems are at risk.

We have a few ideas that can help you and your clients. Drop me a line, and I will email you our surge protection eBook or give me a call to get advice on a specific troublesome system.
